THE DESIGNER

I’m Julianne Marie Brincat, from Julianne Marie Kreattiva Designs. I’m a self-
taught artiste. However, my innate love of art is partly due to the fact that my father
was artist and sculptor Sonny Gatt. I am passionate about culture, nature, and
history… in a nutshell, all that makes our nation what it is.

I have pursued my studies in Communications and Sociology and garnered a Master
degree in Islands and Small States, however my aim was always to seek and earn a
living from art which is my passion.
My father imbued me with a love of art and design. For as long as I can remember, I
was enchanted by the way paint, paper, plaster, fabric and wood came together to
create something beautiful… and of course I tried to emulate him as best as I could.
I love textile prints; I am fascinated by the way fabric can be used in different ways
for different effects; by the way material moves -  flows, as it were – by how the
texture and the weave and the colour can be manipulated to reveal detail and
convey radiance, or block light…
Scarves have always been one of my favourite accessories. I recall thinking (this
was back in 2012) that it would be interesting to see whether I could design a scarf
for myself.
I set to work with paper, pens, and ink, and I was quite pleased with the
result.  However, I realised I would need to learn how to transfer my designs to my
laptop, in order for the eventual printing to be of high quality. A mere photo would not
be good enough, since printers require certain specifications for optimum results.
Actually, there exist specific art applications and programmes for this kind of
endeavour, and these helped me to make my painted scarf a reality.
And the rest is history.
